The Breakfast Club

Every Tuesday morning, students at St Clare's Catholic High School Hassall Grove gather at the school's brand new kitchen for Breakfast Club. This fun and festive feed sees this caring community start the school day strong, and provides an important opportunity for staff to check in with students.

The popular program started several years ago after a survey identified that many students at the school were skipping breakfast on a regular basis. Through the generosity of volunteers, both staff and students, the school started offering a free and nutritious breakfast. A significant proportion of the school population comes along for a chat and a meal each week.

"Being a Catholic community, we felt a need to do something about this so that our students can start the day ready for learning", Theresa said.

Staple offerings include fruit, toast, yoghurt and hot chocolate with little luxuries like choc-chip muffins on the menu as available through Foodbank.

Student Lyanna believes that Breakfast Club is a great way to connect the St Clare's Catholic High School community.

"The Breakfast Club is a very good idea," Lyanna said. "It shows how considerate the school is to unfortunate families and students who had not had time to make food."

Student Maria really appreciates the way that teachers volunteer at Breakfast Club.

"I appreciate breakfast a lot, because it gives us energy for the day and motivates us to be energetic for the day!" Maria said. "It may also help others who are going through a rough time and don't have time to make breakfast."

However, it's the hot chocolate that keeps student Gianna coming along each week, although she sometimes enjoys a cheese toastie too.

"I believe Breakfast Club is good for the students due to the fact that many choose to skip breakfast because they simply do not have time at home." Gianna said. "Although, even if I had breakfast, I still enjoy going to the Breakfast Club."
